17th Century stumpwork Reliquary frame

Exceptionally rare 17th Century stumpwork Reliquary frame. Designed to enshrine an image of a Saint as the focus for daily Devotions.

Beautifully detailed and rich with symbolism. The exceptionally skilful embroiderer has used a complex range of contrasting stitches to create texture. Each element has been worked in silk, wool, silver and gold threads.

In original unrestored condition. Probably French and brought from a Scottish Country House some years ago.

The silk stumpwork has a bronze inner and outer frame.
