Red, Black and White at St Ives Newlyn School

£325.00

A fabulously evocative painting of boats at St Ives in the Newlyn School open air style. The painting has been framed to capture the spirit of "repair for another day's use" with junk shop finds and salvaged cedar rescued from an old boat shed.
Great presence on the wall, this one of a group by the same hand that I am listing, unsigned.

Vintage 1960 / 70’s

31cm high x 35.5cm wide

Following the extension of the Great Western Railway to West Cornwall in1877 the Cornish fishing towns of St Ives and Newlyn both began to attract artists, drawn by the beauty of the scenery, quality of light, simplicity of life and drama of the sea. Newlyn's connection to painting remains strong, and a modern day Newlyn Art School was founded in 2011.
Newlyn painting combined the impressionist idea of working directly from the subject, and if possible in the open air, the artists would paint a variety of scenes from rural life including harbour side activities and the often dangerous life fishermen out at sea.
